Randomness

This is what happens when it’s late and I’m feeling random. No words needed; pictures/videos are worth more.

The Coolest Feeling in the World

By , May 28, 2008 11:06 pm

Being fairly young and naive (shhh don’t tell anyone I admitted that) I haven’t had as many life-defining moments where you actually get to choose the outcome as others. I have to say though that when I did have one AND realized it was happening, it was THE COOLEST feeling in the world. It’s the “realizing it” part of the whole thing that was the best and also a sign that I’m growing up; scary thought.

To all of you experiencing and realizing a life defining moment CONGRATULATIONS. Getting to whatever outcome you chose was a huge step.

How Many Brands Do You See?

By , May 26, 2008 6:37 pm

Ninety brands later, thanks to Noah Brier’s Brand Tag Project and a cool idea from Dear Jane Sample, I too have created a Brand Profile. Jane Sample also started compiling every one’s Brand Timelines. See all the same, new and International brands others are using. So far, this Brand Day by Riot Girl is my favorite.

Brand Profile

Five caveats to My Brand Timeline:

  1. Each logo was used only once (aside from Twitter) no matter how many times I encountered it during the day.
  2. Yes, I use store bought brands and no, I did not include them.
  3. Yes, I make it through the day without Google. It is not my search engine of choice.
  4. Things I couldn’t remember what brand they were (i.e. my bed, couch, etc.) weren’t included. Maybe those brands should do a better job branding themselves if they want to be included next time.
  5. Yes, this is all about perception. I know I encounter way more brands during the day. I either (a) forgot about them (b) didn’t want to include them or the most probable choice; (c) was just too lazy to find their logo.

Brand Loyalty = Bullsh*t

By , May 26, 2008 6:16 pm

Dear Client,
That thing about altering a person’s brand loyalty is bullshit. That’s right, I said it. Sorry to crush all your hopes. If the BDA’s tell you otherwise, they’re LYING to you.For the majority of products, especially those only thought about on a semi-regular basis- i.e. travel, paint, etc.- brand loyalty can be thrown completely out the door. For products used on a daily basis- i.e. beer, laundry detergent, etc. – do you really think someone is going to switch brands because they saw your ad or you tried to be their “friend” on Facebook? Um, that would be a no.

Unless you can offer a customer something that his/her brand of choice cannot – significantly less expensive, no carbs, 100% fragrance free – there’s no hope. Even when you can offer something significantly better/cooler/cheaper, there’s still little hope.

Give up now and save your advertising dollars for something else; like when “X” Brand completely f*cks up. Now, that’s when you make your move. That’s your chance to swoop in and rescue the fair maiden in distress. Until then… go spend your money on something else besides “branding”.

The Web Steaker

By , May 25, 2008 8:33 pm

This guy will streak across the website of your choice. The upside? He’s cute and pink; unlike most streakers out there. Not quite sure what it has to do with Vodafone though… kinda like Office Max’s “Elf Yourself viral campaign. I think Colle McVoy did a much better job of aligning Atmosphere with a viral campaign, Paint That Shit Gold, that makes sense for the brand. It shows too with the amount of submissions and buzz its received in just a few short months.

Creative Advertising

I’ve had these ads forwarded to me about half a dozen times, but I still enjoy looking at them. Great examples of when all departments actually played nicely and COMMUNICATED with each other to not only design the right creative but also choose the appropriate medium and location.

From Life Comes Art

Found DNA11 way back when thanks to an airplane magazine and still love the idea. Now I just wish I could decide which one I want… DNA, thumb print or kiss? Gotta love indecisiveness.

Oh, how I wish I could do this in real life. But, alas I think I’d get in trouble, so this Beating Card from Faber vs. Pulver will have to do.
