Interns Rock

Just throwing that one out there. Even though we put you through hell and make you do things that seem really lame, those projects are a HUGE help in terms of the “bigger picture” and making us more proactive. So, to all the amazing interns out there, THANK YOU! Oh, and I’d like a tall, skinny, vanilla latte :)  Thanks.

Idea Grabber

By , August 18, 2008 8:59 pm

I loved this idea so much, that I spent the last few weeks hunting and then doctoring one of my own. Today, it debuted in my office. It was a huge hit and brought tons of laughter and smiles! Besides bringing smiles and laughter, the fun thing for me was watching all the different ways people approached trying to “grab” an idea. Very interesting… it will definitely be part of a future blog post.

Rule #76

By , August 18, 2008 8:36 pm

In case you didn’t read my previous post, we’re currently in planning for 2009. Personally, I love budget season. No really, I do. I love playing games and this game is the biggest of them all… how much money can you successfully weasel out of Finance, your Client, your Boss, etc. I don’t know about you, but I play this game ALL the time with my dad. It usually goes something like this:

Me: Dad, I test drove the Aston Martin today and LOVED it. That’s the car I want.
Dad: Do you have any idea how much that car costs?! You’re just going to crash it. What else did you test drive?
Me: Well, I test drove a Beetle, a Mini Cooper, a M6 and some Audi.
Dad: Argh! You don’t even remember the name of the car you test drove?
Me: Well, I didn’t really like that one. The M6 and the Mini Cooper were my favorites.
Dad: Fine. Pick and I’ll get you one of those. They’re much less expensive than the Aston Martin.
Me: Okay, I really liked the Aston Martin though… But, I suppose I’ll be just as happy with one of the others.

And that my friends, is how you get exactly what you want :)

While I understand these are preliminary plans and games, let’s put some thought behind them and play like champs! Remember people, if you don’t ask for the sky, you’ll never receive it! On that note, just a few things that really pissed me off about what the BDA’s initial proposal:

1. Publishers that we cut because they BOMBED (more than once) are back in the plan. Seriously?!

2. Spend per month is static. HELLO! We have clear (and always the same) good and bad months. We spend more in distress periods. Why wouldn’t you budget for that?! You are an even bigger moron than I thought.

3. The plan looks EXACTLY the same as 2008. You didn’t even bother to change the colors on the spreadsheet to pretend it was different. This is just disappointing with a capital D. How many times have I asked to see new things? Umm, EVERY time I see you. That would be at least 52 times per year.

4. You didn’t even submit a plan for our newest and one of your biggest, most fun campaigns. WHAT THE F*CK?! Did you just forget about that one?

Twitter and Brands

By , August 18, 2008 7:55 pm

Lately, several posts have popped up about brands on Twitter and how they should use the service. These posts annoy the hell out of me. The people who are writing them are (a) not directly associated with the big brands that are on Twitter (b) don’t have any big brand clients on Twitter and (c) have not interviewed any of the big brands to glean insights as to how Twitter fits into their marketing strategies.

What’s that saying, you should only write from experience? HELLO, the people writing posts like this and this have no business giving unsolicited advice that they don’t take themselves. In fact, their attempt to bring a brand into the Twitter community not only failed in the eyes of the client but also in the Twitter community where the brand received no traction whatsoever. When the client knows you suck, that’s just bad.

Furthermore, don’t write a post and then don’t take your own advice! There’s another saying for this… practice what you preach.

You shouldn’t give advice on things you haven’t experienced. So, how about you stick to what you know and let the brands that are actually on Twitter, like Zappos, @Starbucks, @LuxorLV or Pandora_Radio dole out advice about using Twitter from a brand perspective. I have a feeling they might know a little bit better than you, who DOES NOT have a brand on Twitter.

Switching to WordPress

By , August 16, 2008 6:49 pm

I finally re-formatted all my posts to where I’m satisfied enough to write my first “official” WordPress post. The formatting still isn’t perfect- I have two posts that I can’t figure out how to fix, all the posts with two or more pictures or videos still aren’t lining up and all the titles are in different fonts (WTF?!) – but, I’m taking my fortune cookie advice and running with it. I can always walk away and go back to Blogger if I want to.

How to Eat M&M's

By , August 16, 2008 6:14 pm

Rumor is, “you’re only as good as your last post.” So, thanks to Joker for sharing the best way to eat a bag of M&M’s and making this blog post full of steamy goodness.

First, I’d caress the bag. Show it I’m gentle but make my intentions clear as I tease at the edge, biting ever so gently into the wrapper until I am the one to decide for it to open its sweet contents to me. I’d then take my time with the delicious hard and soft textures that melt in my mouth and sometimes in my hand, always making sure that the bag is satisfied with my execution. I prolong the luscious goodness for as long as possible until the bag is totally spent and I’m smiling with the memory of its delicious taste on my lips and tongue.

Now, go make out with someone!

Paris for President

Paris for Prez

When your completely non-internet savvy parents have seen a spoof video and talk about it, you know (a) it’s good and (b) it’s reach was incredible.

This video was in response to this commercial by John McCain.

Go Phelps

Once again, an advertiser has missed out on some key opportunities by not making their videos easily sharable. Visa’s campaign, Go World, for the Olympics is really cute, involves a lot of feel good commercials and an in-depth site with athletes’ background stories. However, none of the videos can be embedded and there’s no one place (i.e. a YouTube Channel) where you can view all the commercials.

Thanks to this, below is the best I could find. Congratulations to Michael Phelps! I’m impressed by the perseverance, humbleness and maturity he’s shown in these Olympics. Here’s to two more World Record times and Gold Medals!

Fortune Cookies and Wings

By , August 14, 2008 10:14 pm

Last night’s fortune cookie said, “Stop searching for forever, happiness is just next to you.” Somehow, the fortunes I get in cookies always seem to be really appropriate or really get me thinking. This one did both.

In my business life, I’m a total risk-taking maverick. I’m constantly launching new initiatives and being the first in our little corner of the industry to trial new technologies. And, I love it. In fact, the opportunity to do the latter was why I chose my current job over other offers. The crazy thing? I’m the total opposite in my personal life. Hence, why last night’s fortune got me thinking. Maybe I’m waiting for something that’s never going to happen instead of just “doing it” and fixing or changing things as I go.

That one sentence helped remind me that I need to keep leaping and building my wings on the way down. “Wings” aren’t forever, I can always change things, and if worse comes to worse, I can always walk away… no harm done, nothing major lost.
