I don’t believe in Ten Year Plans. There, I said it.
Back in 2006 life was rocky and I made my first and only ten year plan. Honestly, I don’t think any of it came to fruition. Granted, it wasn’t a bad thing, life just went in a different direction.
A few months ago, someone on twitter said, “I ignore all “5 year plans” [because]: 5 years ago, YouTube and Twitter didn’t exist, and Facebook was only for college kids.” While the statement only focuses on emerging media, it’s also how I feel about life. Why force yourself to stick to an outdated plan when you have no idea what tomorrow might bring?
Not that I remember it exactly, but I have a feeling if I had stuck to my plan I would be Editor-in-Chief of ESPN Magazine with some variation of the white-picket fence ideal. You know, the ideal that gets brainwashed into every suburban kid. Today? Those things couldn’t be further from what I want.
Today, I still don’t have a ten year plan. I don’t think I will ever make a plan; life has gone just fine without one. Not having a plan doesn’t mean you’re drifting nor have your eyes on a shoreline, it simply means you have your eyes on many shorelines and you’re not quite ready to miss out on that next big wave
The other day I stumbled on The 100 Girls, 100 Days Project. It intrigued and inspired me. I spent the day thinking about it. Between work and personal, I’ve been in a total rut. I mean, can you really blame me? Add crazy work changes to telling a guy “I want more too” only to have him come back with a harsh “just kidding.” Well, I’d say those two things alone qualify me for rutsville.
So… 10 guys, 10 drinks, 10 weeks was concocted. Here’s the deal:
10 weeks, any day… I don’t know how Mr. Dillinger is doing it, but between work and other stuff, I just can’t fathom picking up a different guy every night. Besides, I like and need some flexibility
10 guys… this part is self explanatory
10 drinks… I’m also on the hunt for a new drink. I figure this is the perfect time to find one
10 blog posts… duh! Each one will make for a great story
Who knows what will happen, but at the very least I’ll have some fun, great stories and find a new drink. If the ten week experiment is cool enough, maybe I’ll go for all 52 weeks
Back in November I decided a post full of links was lame and a blogging cop out, so I stopped. But, then I realized that I like them. They’re fun to go back and reread and they remind me of all the really great links that I stumbled upon. Since this blog is for me, they’re back… as sporadically as I want them to be
I like Kayak’s iPhone app. It’s not the best and it sure could use some improvements, but at least they’re trying. How the iPhone Changed Kayak’s Business is a great article about how Kayak is shaking up the meta-search business.
the3six5 project is an intriguing one – 365 days, 365 points of view. Not to mention, 365 sharp minds. I can’t wait to read all of them (and be a part of the project).
