Mockingbird
For some reason, I love this song by Rob Thomas. Maybe because it references mockingbirds and that song holds a special place in my heart. Maybe because it has the ability to embody personal and professional trials.
Here we stand
Somewhere in between this moment and the end
Will we bend?
Or will we open up and take this whole thing in?
Everybody else is smiling and their smiles don’t fade
And you don’t even wonder why you just don’t think that way
Maybe you and me got lost somewhere, we can’t move on we can’t stay here
Well maybe we’ve just had enough, well maybe we ain’t meant for this love
You and me tried everything
But still that mocking bird wont sing
Well man this life seems hard enough
Well maybe we ain’t meant for this loveI don’t wanna love you now, if you’ll just leave someday
I don’t wanna turn around, if you’ll just walk away
Maybe you and me got lost somewhere, we can’t move on we can’t stay here
10 GDW’s: Week 9 – Food Lovers
I’m always experimenting with something. This post happens to be part of the 10 Guys, 10 Drinks, 10 Weeks experiment. You can see the others here. Enjoy the laughs, I sure am!
Guy #9. Drink #9. Week #9. I must admit, I’ve been dragging my feet for numbers nine and ten. As the project nears an “end,” I wanted these two to be special, different. Pete (not his real name) is certainly special, the kind of guy who really knows how to wine and dine a girl. And, he does it not to get them in bed or get their business, but simply for the pure joy of it. Dinner with Pete was fun, easy and relaxed. I wasn’t so nervous that I just ordered and ate two bites. We ate at Sage (a first) and savored everything – from the wine to the lobster ravioli to scallops and steak. My favorite part was dessert. While it sounded good, it wasn’t the greatest nor what we expected. Pete thought that was unacceptable and ordered dessert all over again. You gotta love a man who knows I have a sweet tooth, no matter how hard I try to deny it.
The drink? Well, on this one I cheated a little. The drink, aside from the wine, was an old, cherished friend – Jack and Ginger. I think Pete will become an old, cherished friend as well.
Check Boxes
I’ve been stumbling on a lot of thoughts lately. A few days ago, I stumbled on the below quote. Ever since then, I’ve been rereading it:
And therein lies the best career advice I could possibly dispense: just DO things. Chase after the things that interest you and make you happy. Stop acting like you have a set path, because you don’t. No one does. You shouldn’t be trying to check off the boxes of life; they aren’t real and they were created by other people, not you. There is no explicit path I’m following, and I’m not walking in anyone else’s footsteps. I’m making it up as I go.
I’m not a fan of check boxes or ten year plans or following paths. What I am a fan of is making it up as I go along. Oh yes, sometimes it’s tough. Sometimes, it really sucks not knowing or to feel lost or floating. But, on the other hand, it really helps you to focus on the moment. To focus on today and being right here, right now. It’s about being “here” and not worrying or wanting to be “there.”
Am I shunning goals, hopes and dreams? Absolutely not! But, I do think it’s okay to stray from the path, to not worry about making check marks in imaginary boxes and to start living in the moment.
No Strings
I stumbled upon a great quote today by Cheng Yen:
Happiness does not coming from having much, but from being attached to little
How true? It seems like we are happiest when our lives contain no strings – no material things, no pets that can die, no significant others we care enough about to hurt us during break-ups, no kids to worry about getting hurt or sick. But, when does a life of no strings get tiring? Maybe never. Maybe there will always be some exotic destination to jet off to or something to throw money at besides saving it for a child’s college tuition. Maybe there will always be a hot Pool Boy that you never get close enough to for them to break your heart.
But, on the flip side, maybe a life of strings is worth living. Maybe a life where you risk your heart everyday is the only life worth living.
Lead On
I must admit that I’m not necessary a fan of Stoli Vodka, but, I am a huge fan of their new campaign – Lead On. Would You Have Drink with You? The campaign is brilliant, tongue in cheek and pulls the emotional ties of their target audience.
From their site, the idea behind the campaign is:
It’s not about their fame or fortune. It’s that they dare to challenge convention, unafraid to break new ground. They’re bold enough to attempt things that most say couldn’t, or even shouldn’t, be done- and they’re passionate enough to achieve them. But most of all, they’ve truly lived life.
Here’s the first two commercials from the new campaign
