I wish I could hate Apple, but then they go and make brilliant commercials like this one.
This is what we believe, technology alone is not enough… when technology gets out of the way everything becomes more delightful, even magical. That’s when you leap forward.
There’s the first line, the second line, but then there’s a line of negative space that runs between them. See it? 1+1=3. How many times in our lives, careers, thoughts, etc. do we only see the white lines? How many times do we miss the beauty and innovation that’s right in front of our faces?
In marketing, innovation and interactive experiences seem to be the overriding buzzwords. Marketers endlessly struggle with the next “big” thing. We rack our brains, search far and wide and often end up with costly flops. But, what if instead of searching far and wide, we slowed down and looked between the “lines” right in front of our faces? Sometimes, you have to slow down to get ahead. And sometimes, one plus one really does equal three.
It’s that time of year again… Super Bowl XLV. The more things change, the more they stay the same. After seeing the commercials, I have to wonder, has advertising gone downhill or as consumers (and marketers) are we expecting too much from Super Bowl ads? The interesting piece? It seems like we’ve turned back time. This year, there were no crazy specials (remember Dockers free pants), no reason to visit a YouTube page to see the long version of a commercial and very few strong calls to action to visit a website. Sure, this year, some companies had paid search running – kudos to Coke, Chevy and a handful of others. And, you have to love that the Google ad from last year’s Super Bowl popped up as the #1 video search. Coincidence? I think not
All around best. Honestly, I wouldn’t expect anything less from Weiden+Kennedy
The one that pulled on your heart strings. Kudos to VW for clearly putting some additional pre mainstream advertising around this commercial. With 16.4MM views, it’s outpaced even the best (i.e. Chrysler only has 7,783 views)
Telefora’s ad cracked me up. Sadly, Telefora didn’t even upload it to their YouTube channel. Luckily, someone else uploaded it to theirs and are reaping the rewards.
If there is one thing I’ve learned about living a life it’s that you need to keep moving. And if there’s another thing it’s that you really should quit your job every once in awhile and take on something new, maybe even something that seems crazy and scares the hell out of you. – Jonathan Coultron
I’ve been stumbling on a lot of thoughts lately. A few days ago, I stumbled on the below quote. Ever since then, I’ve been rereading it:
And therein lies the best career advice I could possibly dispense: just DO things. Chase after the things that interest you and make you happy. Stop acting like you have a set path, because you don’t. No one does. You shouldn’t be trying to check off the boxes of life; they aren’t real and they were created by other people, not you. There is no explicit path I’m following, and I’m not walking in anyone else’s footsteps. I’m making it up as I go.
I’m not a fan of check boxes or ten year plans or following paths. What I am a fan of is making it up as I go along. Oh yes, sometimes it’s tough. Sometimes, it really sucks not knowing or to feel lost or floating. But, on the other hand, it really helps you to focus on the moment. To focus on today and being right here, right now. It’s about being “here” and not worrying or wanting to be “there.”
Am I shunning goals, hopes and dreams? Absolutely not! But, I do think it’s okay to stray from the path, to not worry about making check marks in imaginary boxes and to start living in the moment.
One day soon I’m going to write a real post. I think about it every day. I write one in my head. But then, writing it here, the words and ideas seem silly (sillier than my usual ideas ). I think I may have writer’s block.
This is how I feel about everything at the moment. I hope it’s true. I think it’s true. With all my heart, I want it to be true. I have to believe it’s true. Why? Because if it’s not, then I don’t know what I’m doing or fighting for.
