Limitless Possibilities

The words “limitless possibilities” has popped up a lot lately. To me, it’s a fascinating concept that is difficult to master. What does “limitless possibilities” mean? I’m glad you asked, because here are three explanations:

In a fiction book I read recently, the main character struggled with opening herself up to the limitless possibilities. Instead, she looked at everything in a linear fashion. When she did open herself up, all the solutions fell into place much easier than when she thought linearly.

The other night, a friend shared her experience with goal setting. When we set goals, they’re often set with a very small knowledge base of what we do know. Yet, there’s so much more that we don’t know. With that in mind, we should strive to set “limitless goals”. In other words, we should open ourselves up to limitless possibilities :)

And last, but not least, Nike brought it home (wrapped in a perfect bow) with this sentence and video:

We’re all capable of a little more — a little faster, a little higher, a little stronger, a little more. And when we look at all of the little things we’ve done, we’ll see the big things we’re doing.

How I Became a Nike Fan

I’ve blogged a few times about not being a Nike fan. While I love their commercials, I’ve never been impressed with their sports gear. But, this year, Nike has once, twice, three times won me over.

Aside from their clothes fitting awesome, here’s why I’m willing to pay $50 for a pair of shorts I could get at TJ Maxx for $15.

  1. Their twitter team is WOW. As one of the largest and most talked about brands in social media, they get a massive amounts of comments daily. Yet, from Facebook to Twitter they’ve responded to every single one of mine in not only a timely fashion, but in a way that makes me feel special every time.
  2. Nike doesn’t do advertising. They do EXPERIENCES. NikeFuel Band, Nike+, Nike Training Club App are all phenomenal apps. The best part is that Nike got the little details right. Workout completed? Nike sends a congratulations message. Best #nikefuel Friday? Nike lets you know. Have another great day? Nike lets you know again. This time, with a different congratulatory message. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the future of marketing.
  3. Nike doesn’t just get the digital interactions right, they get the offline ones too. Far and away, the Nike Women’s Half Marathon was one of my favorite race experiences. In fact, it was so fun, it’s a topic for a whole other post :)

Nike – thanks for being a part of my fitness journey. You’ve not only made the experience memorable (and trackable), but also special.

Beneath Your Beautiful

It’s not often that a song strikes me so much that I post it here. In fact, it’s been two years since I have. But, Beneath Your Beautiful by Labrinth featuring Emeli Sande did.

Take a listen. It’s a beautiful song about the walls and masks we wear every day. And, the someone who wants to see behind the wall.

Song Lyrics:

“Beneath Your Beautiful”
(feat. Emeli Sandé)

You tell all the boys “No”

Makes you feel good, yeah.
I know you’re out of my league
But that won’t scare me away, oh, no

You’ve carried on so long,
You couldn’t stop if you tried it.
You’ve built your wall so high
That no one could climb it,
But I’m gonna try.

Would you let me see beneath your beautiful?
Would you let me see beneath your perfect?
Take it off now, girl, take it off now, girl
I wanna see inside
Would you let me see beneath your beautiful tonight?

You let all the girls go
Makes you feel good, don’t it?
Behind your Broadway show
I heard a boy say, “Please, don’t hurt me”

You’ve carried on so long
You couldn’t stop if you tried it.
You’ve built your wall so high
That no one could climb it.
But I’m gonna try

Would you let me see beneath your beautiful?
Would you let me see beneath your perfect?
Take it off now, boy, take it off now, boy
I wanna see inside
Would you let me see beneath your beautiful tonight, oh, tonight?

See beneath, see beneath,
I…
Tonight
I…

I’m gonna climb on top your ivory tower
I’ll hold your hand and then we’ll jump right out
We’ll be falling, falling but that’s OK
‘Cause I’ll be right here
I just wanna know

Would you let me see beneath your beautiful?
Would you let me see beneath your perfect?
Take it off now, girl, take it off now, girl (take it off now, boy, take it off now, boy)
‘Cause I wanna see inside
Would you let me see beneath your beautiful tonight, oh, oh, oh, tonight?
See beneath your beautiful, oh, tonight.
We ain’t perfect, we ain’t perfect, no.
Would you let me see beneath your beautiful tonight?

The (Absurd) Power of Branding

When you can charge $120 for a plain, white T-shirt and not even have to imprint your logo on the front, well, that’s where the power of branding heads into the absurd.

#LexusInstaFilm

It’s rare these days that I post about a great marketing campaign. There just aren’t a lot these days. Most campaigns are cookie cutter or trying so hard to be cool while using the latest and greatest social media fad, that they just fail.

But, Lexus’s #InstaFilm nails it. They include the “hot” trend, stop motion video while bringing together a community of Instagrammers to experience something they do every day (take photos) in a way they’ve never experienced it before.

Make sure to watch the whole video, #LexusInstaFilm! The end gives some insights into the how’s and why’s of the project.

Advertising Slogans in a Fragmented World

This month, 25 years ago, Nike, with the help of Wieden + Kennedy, unveiled the now famous advertising slogan, “Just Do It,” to the world.

In a look back, AdWeek laments that “Just Do It” is the last great advertising slogan we’ll ever see. Why? The writer believes that when the slogan launched, media times were “easier”, less fragmented. In today’s “snackable” and fragmented world, he believes that no slogan can “stick to the [consumer’s] ribs.”

I have to disagree. Slogans these days don’t stand the test of time because of the marketers, not the consumers. How many of you work for a brand that changes their slogan, look, image every 30, 60 or 90 days? Fashion brands change theirs even more frequently. As marketers, we get bored of seeing the same image over and over again. We ass-u-me that the consumer must be bored too. But, what we often fail to remember is that most of our consumers interact with a brand on a very infrequent basis. The slogan that you’ve heard 100 times, they’ve only heard once or twice. If you want a slogan to stick, then you have to infuse it everywhere, into everything you do for months, if not years. Only when marketers start doing that, will we have “great” advertising slogans once again.

The “snackable” lesson? Do and say something until you want to puke. Then, do it 1,000 times more. Only then can you ensure that that specific message has gotten to your consumers instead of lost in today’s fragmented media world.

10 Moments, 100 Discoveries: Moment 8 – I am Spartan

In 2011, I set out on an adventure of 100 Discoveries. I thought I could finish in a year. But, the reality is, you should never finish an adventure like the one I created. With that in mind, this post is part of that project. You can see all 10 Moments here and the entire project here. Enjoy the moments, I sure am!

Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. – #SpartanQuote

8.6 miles. 24 obstacles. Mud. Barbed wire. Las Vegas heat. Hardcore hills. Jumping over fire. No music. No phone. No sunglasses.

IMG_4518To say the Las Vegas Super Spartan Race was outside of my comfort zone would be an understatement. Being 8 weeks post surgery, I hadn’t trained too much and definitely had done no upper body training. I was scared shitless. And that’s exactly why I wanted to do it :)

After 3 hours and 53 minutes, the result? It was tough. There were some obstacles like the rope climb that I “failed,” having to do burpees for not completing. I ran for the fire pit, chickened out and had to start my run/jump again. BUT I finished! I ran 90% of the way (holy cow!) and the lessons?

  • Reality is always WAY less scary than what you expect/imagine/build up in your head.
  • Try everything… Most of the time your body CAN do it!
  • Teamwork makes anything more fun.

I am Spartan Tough!

10 Moments, 100 Discoveries: Moment 7 – Slow Progress is Progress

In 2011, I set out on an adventure of 100 Discoveries. I thought I could finish in a year. But, the reality is, you should never finish an adventure like the one I created. With that in mind, this post is part of that project. You can see all 10 Moments here and the entire project here. Enjoy the moments, I sure am!

One morning I woke up, looked in the mirror and said, “Holy cow! I’ve gained over thirty pounds!” For the record, on a 4’11” frame, that’s A LOT. As much as I tried to pretend, the reality is, the thirty pounds didn’t appear overnight. But, what I did decide overnight was to finally do something about it. I joined a gym, hired a personal trainer AND a nutrition coach. I was motivated and invested. I was ready to lose 7+ pounds a week just like the people on Biggest Loser :) To my initial frustation, the weight didn’t fall off overnight nor after a week or even two weeks.

Slowly but surely, I made progress and not just the kind you see on a scale. I overhauled my diet and I started to feel better – more energy and less bloating. One day, I realized that I was walking up my stairs without huffing and puffing. When I started, I could barely last 10 minutes on the Stairmaster. Now, I knock out over 30 minutes with ease. I’ve come a long way, but, it didn’t happen overnight. Four and a half months later, I am back in my “before Columbus” jeans! And, more importantly, I’m starting to like the person I see in the mirror again.

Keep Going

Through this journey I’ve learned a multitude of lessons – just do it, small changes can make a big difference, focus on ONE thing at a time… the list goes on. But, my favorite lesson, one that hasn’t really stuck before is:

Slow progress IS progress

Before you know it, all that slow progress really adds up to something… like losing 17.5 pounds!

10 Moments, 100 Discoveries: Moment 6 – My Favorite

In 2011, I set out on an adventure of 100 Discoveries. I thought I could finish in a year. But, the reality is, you should never finish an adventure like the one I created. With that in mind, this post is part of that project. You can see all 10 Moments here and the entire project here. Enjoy the moments, I sure am!

Time stands still best in moments that look suspiciously like ordinary life. -Brian Andreas

There’s a moment every week that’s my favorite. In this weekly moment, it’s as if time stands still. It’s a time where I have no place to be, no one to answer to and no worry of what’s next. Every Saturday morning, I wake up whenever my body is ready – no alarm telling me to be somewhere. I lay in bed for as long as I want and catch up on my favorite TV shows via iPad while laying in bed. Sometimes it’s one show, sometimes it’s four. The beauty is that this moment gets to be whatever I want it to be.

Strangely, this moment is mundane, ordinary, simple. Yet, it’s the one moment I yearn for every week. It’s my light at the end of the tunnel. And, it’s all mine.

10 Moments, 100 Discoveries: Moment 5 – The Moments Others Make for You

In 2011, I set out on an adventure of 100 Discoveries. I thought I could finish in a year. But, the reality is, you should never finish an adventure like the one I created. With that in mind, this post is part of that project. You can see all 10 Moments here and the entire project here. Enjoy the moments, I sure am!

I can’t figure out why, but I always feel a little funny when people buy me things, especially when I’m right there. You know the moment- you’re out shopping, find something you love, go to pay and the person with you either beats you to it or says, “Let me get that for you.” In every situation, it’s a really nice gesture. But, for whatever reason, it always makes me a little uncomfortable.

The last time this moment happened, it finally hit me. Letting someone else buy you something ties that ordinary “something” more strongly to a moment and person than if you had purchased it yourself. There are few “ordinary” things that I look back on, smile and remember a moment. But, I can look back at each piece that someone else bought me, remember the moment, the person and smile. To those who have bought me silly things, iPhone cases, jewelry, ice cream… thank you for helping to make those ordinary moments magical memories.
