Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, a girl fell for a boy. She even used the “L word” and his name in the same sentence. For a while, it was good. In fact, it was very good. The boy brought her jewels from near and far, made pictures from the stars and slayed dragons in her name. But, one day, the boy didn’t come home. This time, the dragon had slayed him. The girl’s heart was broken and she learned that saying, “I love you” was dangerous; the most dangerous thing she had ever done.

The girl couldn’t imagine life without the boy and so with a broken heart, she traveled near and far. The girl traveled to every city the boy had slayed a dragon in, but couldn’t stay; the memories were too painful. She finally settled in a foreign land, one that the boy had never talked about, and set out to make a new start. It was hard. The girl missed the boy greatly and feared saying the “L word” to anyone new. Then one day, the girl met another boy. The boy brought the girl sunflowers and made her laugh. Nevertheless, the girl couldn’t bring herself to say, “I love you” and so the boy went away. But, more boys came. While they brought gifts and jokes, they never kept the girl entertained for very long and so she asked them all to leave. Then one day, the girl met a very different boy. This boy didn’t bring sunflowers or jewels, but he made the girl laugh and smile and taught her how to dance in the moonlight. This new boy pleased the girl and she asked him to stay. And he did. But, the girl remembered that falling in love was dangerous, too dangerous. And so, she walked away…
