Fortune Cookies and Wings

By , August 14, 2008 10:14 pm

Last night’s fortune cookie said, “Stop searching for forever, happiness is just next to you.” Somehow, the fortunes I get in cookies always seem to be really appropriate or really get me thinking. This one did both.

In my business life, I’m a total risk-taking maverick. I’m constantly launching new initiatives and being the first in our little corner of the industry to trial new technologies. And, I love it. In fact, the opportunity to do the latter was why I chose my current job over other offers. The crazy thing? I’m the total opposite in my personal life. Hence, why last night’s fortune got me thinking. Maybe I’m waiting for something that’s never going to happen instead of just “doing it” and fixing or changing things as I go.

That one sentence helped remind me that I need to keep leaping and building my wings on the way down. “Wings” aren’t forever, I can always change things, and if worse comes to worse, I can always walk away… no harm done, nothing major lost.

Ironman

I recently updated my five year plan. I’m not a big fan of five year plans- too much committment – but mine was about two years outdated and in need of some serious revisions.

Anyway, when comparing the “old” and the “new”, there was only one item that stayed the same… qualify for the Ironman World Championships. I always push it back because it requires some serious endurance training. But, after today’s practice, I don’t think it would be as hard as I always make it out to be. I’d have to add some distance to the running, throw in a few more open water swims and add biking back to the routine. Easy cheesy.
