Today you’d be eight years old. Happy Birthday baby boy… time really does heal all wounds, but I still think of you every day. These days, they are only happy thoughts.

10 Kisses, 100 Discoveries: #2 Car Kisses

I have one deal breaker. Mae West says kissing is a man’s signature. Signature or not, it also tells you everything you need to know about a man. 1 Year, 10 Projects, 100 Discoveries started with 10 Guys, 10 Weeks, 10 Drinks. The sequel is 10 Kisses, 10 Tastes. This post is part of that project. You can see all 10 kisses here and the entire project here. Get ready to pucker up, I am!

I know one man that will never look at a red light the same again. Duncan (not his real name) is built like my “typical” type – six feet tall, secretly a red head and with the physique of a basketball player. His steel gray eyes twinkle when I take his scarcastic comments and throw out something even better.

Truth be told, our first kiss was actually on the dance floor. You know the type. After some liquid libations and bodies pressed together, you can’t help but tilt your head and share a private moment in a very public space. But, the kiss in his black, BMW Z4 was one that he’s sure to never forget. Being a tease, it was one “kiss” I started and then only continued at red lights. Duncan picked up the “game” fast, begging for all the lights to be red and the taste of forbidden.

The discovery? Maybe my “typical” type isn’t the right fit for me. While Duncan might never look at his car the same way again, I’m still waiting for my red light moment.

10 Kisses, 100 Discoveries: #1 The Hand Kiss

I have one deal breaker. Mae West says kissing is a man’s signature. Signature or not, it also tells you everything you need to know about a man. 1 Year, 10 Projects, 100 Discoveries started with 10 Guys, 10 Weeks, 10 Drinks. The sequel is 10 Kisses, 10 Tastes. This post is part of that project. You can see all 10 kisses here and the entire project here. Get ready to pucker up, I am!

There’s nothing quite as sexy as a guy who takes a woman’s hand, gives her a sultry look, bends his lips to it and kisses ever so lightly. It’s even sexier when the guy doing it has a foreign accent. Patrick (not his real name) was an Irish bartender who not only knew how to work a bar, but also women. His timing for refilling drinks or sending a shot your way was impeccable. He knew when you didn’t really like the drink he made or when to pop back over to keep you wanting more… of him. And, he knew just the right moment to take my hand in his, look me in the eye and intimately touch his lips to it in a way that sent chills down my spine and butterflies back up my stomach.

What happened next? Well, this post is only about the first kiss, not the second 😉 But, the taste of the second? Minty licorice. It’s the taste of a smoker and one I surprisingly enjoy.

10 Commitments, 100 Discoveries: #1 – 100 Discoveries

Hi, I’m a self proclaimed commitment-phobe. But, I’m also one that is working very hard to change. Honestly, it’s one of my toughest struggles. But, I am proud to say it is one that I am chipping away at slowly but surely. One day, when I tell my kids of my fear of commitment they will just laugh and say, “No way, not you!”

With the commitment, 1 Year, 10 Projects, 100 Discoveries, I’m working to show myself that commitments are like trains; it doesn’t matter where they’re going. What matters is deciding to get on. Discoveries “#60-69” are about commitments and plans. This post is part of that project. You can see all 10 commitments here and the entire project here. Focus on the plans, I sure am!

One of my favorite blogs to stumble upon every so often is Scalable Intimacy. Somehow, I always manage to hit a recent post that hits home. True to form, the post, Focus, did just that:

“So I guess my plan,” I continued confidently, “is to put some feelers out there in those three directions, and just kind of see what works. Once I know more about the opportunities that are really out there, I’ll decide which looks the best, and move in that direction.”

“Well that’s good thinkin’ Trap,” he said in characteristic monotone. “Too bad the world doesn’t work that way.”

He continued, making a chopping gesture in the air for emphasis… “Every one of those things you just casually tossed off there is hard to do. And I can promise you, there are lots of people just as smart as you are – many of ‘em better looking – who are focused 100% on just one of those things. What makes you think you’re going to beat them with 33% effort?

“Well… I … er…”

“Exactly. Decide what you want to do, Trap. Make a plan. Then go do it.

Trap sounds all too much like me 🙂 I hate putting all my eggs in one basket until I’m 100% sure of what I want. But, that’s what getting on a train (aka commitment) is all about. While I’m 100% committed to this project, I shamefully haven’t committed fully to other things. I’m hoping that tying them into this project will force me to find the focus needed to get me to the “next level”.

Miss Me

I’m a big fan of the movie No Strings Attached. To me, it’s the perfect romantic comedy. Tonight, I stumbled upon the below quote from the movie.

If you miss me, you can’t text, you can’t email, you can’t post it on my Facebook wall. If you really miss me, you come and see me.

I have a big problem when people say, “I miss you”. In fact, I’ve written about it before. Two years later, my feelings on the phrase haven’t changed. In my opinion, it’s a cop out. If you really miss someone, then do something about it. Jump on a plane and go see them. Otherwise, you don’t really miss them.

10 Experiences, 100 Discoveries: E6 – Kitty Bar

Albert Einstein said, “the only source of knowledge is experience.” With that in mind, as part of my adventure, 1 Year, 10 Projects, 100 Discoveries, ten of the discoveries are about experiences I’ve always wanted to have. This post is part of that project. You can see all 10 Experiences here and the entire project here. Enjoy the moments, I sure am!

This is one experience I didn’t plan on. To be honest, before having the experience, I didn’t even consider going to a Lesbian bar an “experience”. I simply considered it a “normal” occurrence. But, nevertheless, an experience I did have.

One of my best friends happens to like girls the way I like boys 🙂 This weekend, I accompanied her to a Betty fundraiser at Posh Nightclub. While it was a fun, intimate venue complete with stripper poles, the majority of the crowd wasn’t quite our speed. The part of the crowd that was our speed was heading to Kitty Bar, the girl portion of Krave, which has been voted the #1 gay nightclub in the country. We said, “What the heck,” and headed there as well.

Admittedly, the crowd at Kitty Bar wasn’t what I expected. But then again, I’m not sure what I expected. The best part? It was a club filled with the craziest mixture of women I’ve ever seen. Tall, short, skinny, fat, black white all dancing together. There were high maintenance girls dressed to the nines in club attire dancing right along with the low maintenance girls in sweatshirts. There were girls that even I could peg as lesbians and others that I wouldn’t have guessed in a million years. It was a melting pot of cultures, ideas and ideals. It was a mixture that is rarely, if ever seen, at other nightclubs. Heck, it was a mixture that is rarely seen anywhere. While we might preach integration, we often stick to our look alike cliques. At Kitty Bar, the only clique was that they were all girls looking for a place to openly share their love, dance and have a few drinks.

While I was a bit out of my element, it was an experience that made an everlasting impression.

Quotes

I love quotes. Before Tumblr, I collected them in Word documents on my computer. Before computers, I collected them in spiral bound notebooks. Needless to say, I have notebook after notebook and Word doc after Word doc of quotes. My favorite part of your Facebook profile? The favorite quotations section, of course! To me, that section says more about you than any other thing you have listed on your profile.

What do your favorite quotes say about you? How have your favorite quotes changed over the years? And, if you collect quotes can you see the pattern? Can you tell exactly where you were and what events were shaping your life when you deemed a quote worthy enough to repost, save, favorite, etc.? A collection of favorite quotes are like keeping a diary that’s in a secret code only you and those who know you can decipher.

Living the Lie

Every day, we lie to ourselves. We tell ourselves that we’re in good enough shape, we love our jobs, that we love the person we’re with, that the sex is great or that’s how it’s supposed to feel. In other words, we settle for what’s comfortable. We settle because we fear the unknown, we fear being alone. And most of all, we fear that what we’ve felt for so long is wrong. No one wants to admit that they were wrong about such life altering choices.

But, do living the lies stop us from being truly happy? Or do the lies make us happy? Or do the lies stop us from being our very best selves?

And, while you might think the truth, when you truly say it out loud to yourself, you can never, ever go back to the lie. And sometimes, realizing the truth and that you can’t go back hurts more than living the lie ever did.

10 Experiences, 100 Discoveries: E5 – Curiouser & Curiouser

Albert Einstein said, “the only source of knowledge is experience.” With that in mind, as part of my adventure, 1 Year, 10 Projects, 100 Discoveries, ten of the discoveries are about experiences I’ve always wanted to have. This post is part of that project. You can see all 10 Experiences here and the entire project here. Enjoy the moments, I sure am!

This was an experience I started lusting for about ten hours before it happened. I’m a big fan of Alice and Wonderland; the original, not the Johnny Depp remake 🙂 Naturally, as soon as a special friend told me about this NYC haven, I was obsessed and had to have breakfast at Alice’s Tea Cup. Thankfully, the person I was meeting for breakfast the next day was happy to indulge!

While the chocolate, carmel salted scone was one of the best scones I’ve ever had, breakfast and drinks the previous night reminded me of one of my favorite lessons – it’s not where you are, but WHO you are with that matters. While not surprising, it never ceases to amaze me how the energy of a place transforms based on who you’re with.

The previous night, I had visited the Brandy Library. While it was one experience I had lusted after, my favorite moments of the night happened at The Patriot, a true dive bar. My first shot of Tequila Avion, getting to choose songs from the jukebox and playing old arcade games is much more my speed. And the company? Well, there are no words that could do him justice.

The same could be said for my experience at Alice’s Tea Cup. While cute, if I was the owner, I would have done so much more theming! Nevertheless, it was one Valentine’s Day breakfast that I will never forget. Special thanks to my breakfast companion who indulged my childish exuberance over this hidden gem.
